Thinking of hosting or participating in a food drive this holiday season? Here are some of the most sought-after items, according to Food Banks Canada:
- Whole grain cereals
- Pasta (canned or dry) and pasta sauces
- Dairy (fresh, shelf stable, and powdered milk)
- Canned goods (beans, soups, and stews)
- Meat alternatives (peanut butter, soy, assorted nuts)
- Canned or frozen meats and fish
- Infant foods and baby formula
- Canned vegetables and fruit
- Bathroom tissue and diapers
- Personal hygiene products
Avoid perishable items and items that require refrigeration*, home baking, food and beverages in glass containers, candy*, expired goods, food without labels, and mixes or kits that call for expensive or inaccessible ingredients.
*Exceptions may apply if your group is putting together a seasonal hamper.
TIP: Always contact your local food bank before starting your own food drive for a list of their most needed or seasonal items. To find a food bank in your area, visit: https://foodbankscanada.ca/find-a-food-bank/
And, don’t forget, food insecurity is a year-round problem for many individuals and families in our community. Consider donating and/or volunteering your time throughout the year.
